The Shettihalli Rosary Church is a hauntingly beau

The Shettihalli Rosary Church is a hauntingly beautiful 19th-century ruin located in the Hassan district of Karnataka. Known as the "Submerged Church" or "Floating Church," it is famous for its unique seasonal cycle where it partially disappears underwater every monsoon.Built in the 1860s by French missionaries, the church was designed in the French Gothic style to serve British estate owners and the local community. It was constructed using a traditional mixture of mortar, bricks, jaggery, and eggs.• The Submergence: In 1960, the construction of the Hemavati Dam (Gorur Dam) led to the abandonment of the surrounding village. Since then, the church has been partially submerged in the reservoir's backwaters during the rainy season.• Gothic Features: Even in its dilapidated state, the ruins showcase classic Gothic elements like pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and a roofless skeleton that remains standing despite decades of seasonal flooding.Visiting Experience
The church offers two distinct experiences depending on when you visit, making it a favorite for photographers and history enthusiasts.Practical Information
• Amenities: There are very few shops or restaurants in the immediate vicinity, so it is highly recommended to carry your own food and water.• Access: The site is approximately 22 km from Hassan and about 200 km from Bengaluru. While it is accessible by road, the path leading from the main road to the ruins can be easy to miss, so pay close attention as you approach the village.• Safety Tip: It is generally advised to leave the site before sunset, as there are no nearby accommodations or streetlights in the rural area surrounding the reservoir.
